France Fly

The France Fly is European nymphing distilled to its essentials: a slim, translucent micro tubing body over a Firehole Outdoors 516 barbless jig hook, weighted with a tungsten bead that punches through current and gets down in the zone on the first drift, not the fourth.

That tubing body is the whole trick. It catches light the way a real mayfly nymph's abdomen does, with clean segmentation and a wet, glassy sheen that holds up cast after cast — no dubbing to fray, no thread to unravel. Behind it, a Coq de Leon tail flares stiff and speckled, giving the fly a live, upright posture as it tumbles through the seam.

The minimal natural-colored collar is the restraint that makes it work. No hot orange, no neon pink, just a whisper of buggy fiber where the thorax should be. When the water is low and clear and every fish in the run has already refused a hotspot, this is the fly you tie on.

Three colors, sizes 16 and 18

Brown is the everyday mayfly nymph, drab and hard for a trout to argue with in any water. Olive leans toward the caddis and baetis end of the drift, especially in spring and fall. Dark peacock runs darkest, with a shifting green-bronze cast that shows up in broken riffles and low light. All three come in size 16 and size 18, the sizes that match the bulk of what drifts past a trout's nose.
